This really happened to me, by the way, early in my career. I won't mention any names, but two of my past employers had the bad habit of issuing payroll checks without enough money in the account to cover all of them. So I wouldn't take lunch on payday until I got my check, then I'd head to the bank it was drawn from and get cash. On the way home, I would stop at my credit union and deposit the cash.
