The best way to start a visit to the park is to stop by the Kilauea Visitor Center, where information is available on the hiking trails, current conditions, and volcanic activity.
Kona Helicopter Tours
Because Kona is one of the most ecologically diverse areas in the world, a helicopter tour of the Big Island is an exciting and varied experience. Punalu’u Beach Park
This beach park, known for its jet black sand and swaying coconut palms, sits on the shore of the Punalu’u Harbor, near the southern tip of the island about two hours’ drive from the resort. The most striking feature is the black sand, left over from ancient lava flows into the ocean. The harbor’s cold waters are home to a population of green sea turtles, which do not shy away from humans, to the delight of snorkelers.
Golf
Enjoy some of the most spectacular golf in the world at Kona Country Club, with two courses that offer unforgettable views of the mountains and the coast. Appropriate for all players regardless of experience, both courses will end up on your list of the most memorable golf experiences you’ve ever had! At Makalei Golf Club, players enjoy a scenic, woodland course with elevations ranging from approximately 1,800 feet to 2,850 feet. The course offers panoramic views, as well as lava tubes, cinder cones and a 100-year-old stone wall that runs the length of the course.
Snorkeling
The Big Island’s west side has some of the best snorkeling in the world. At Spencer Beach Park, entry into the water is easy thanks to the protected beach. This is a popular spot for snorkeling because the area is reef protected and the water is calm with plenty of fish and sea turtles. Kailua Bay offers snorkeling right near the pier on Ali’i Drive, with opportunities to see fish, eels and sea turtles in clear, calm waters. At Keauhou, you can kayak to a cove at the mouth of a sea cave and explore the waters below, observing tropical fish, sea turtles, and spinner dolphins, as well as dry lava tubes and coral reefs.
Luaus
There are several opportunities to experience a royal Polynesian luau in Kona, consisting of a delicious Hawaiian feast, followed by traditional entertainment. As you relax and dine, Hawaiian dancers perform to native beats under the light of torches flickering in the ocean breezes. The Island Breeze Luau is one of the more popular luaus, with a performance that re-creates the settling of the Pacific.
Sportfishing
Set sail from Kona aboard one of the many fishing charters for an unforgettable adventure. In these waters, Pacific Blue Marlin are plentiful, as well as Striped Marlin and Pacific Sailfish. Or, you may hook a 100-pound yellowfin tuna, otherwise known as Ahi, or a colorful Mahi Mahi.
Mauna Kea Observatory
Located at the 14,000-foot summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island, the Mauna Kea Observatory is the largest astronomical observatory in the world. Visitors will start their experience at the Visitor Information Station of the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy, located at the 9,000-foot level of the Mauna Kea access road. This facility offers a fascinating learning experience about the science of the universe, and the telescopes at the observatory. After dark, guests at the Visitor Information Center can peer at the stars through portable telescopes, before picking up a few souvenirs. While visits to the observatory are permitted, the unpaved road is treacherous and accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicle or commercial tour. Also, visitors are not permitted to look through the telescopes at the summit, and are not allowed after dark.
